Jung’s Control Mask Behavior
Carl Jung theorized that each person has a persona, or mask. It is important to realize our mask behavior, or core personality characteristic, to manage any possible negative effects. Managing the misuse of this behavior will allow us to reduce any negative consequences on ourselves or others. The masks are grouped into three main personality styles: friendly helper, strong achiever, and logical thinker. This test compliments my MBTI results and confirms certain strengths and weaknesses.
Evaluation and Results:
I scored a 111 in the category of a friendly helper, 83 as a strong achiever and 56 as a logical thinker.
My strong score as a friendly helper is characterized by my focus on the well-being of others. My personal and professional relationships center on the encouragement of my team members and friends. I enjoy making people feel a part of the fabric of life and making sure that they fulfill a purpose. In a group setting, I am primarily concerned with the well-being of each individual. However, I will often put an emphasis on this while neglecting other responsibilities. This might actually lead to neglecting some individuals at the expense of others so I am constantly evaluating the dynamics in a group setting to avoid lulls of awkward interaction. Additionally, I strive to enrich my neighborhood community by volunteering to help those in need.
When I combine my tendency to be a friendly helper with my extroverted nature, the result is a tendency to be overbearing in conversations and meetings. I try too hard sometimes to be outgoing and need to constantly remind myself to evaluate the nature and needs of people around me.
Another negative side of the friendly helper is doing so much for others that they leave little time for themselves. This has always been a personal issue for me but one that I now need to balance given the additional complications that evolve in life (i.e. work, school, and marriage). A balance needs to exist between my need to please and ability to complete personal tasks.
I also had a high strong achiever score. I take a strong sense of pride in my work ethic. I am drawn to leadership positions and try my best in all situations, be that social or work related. A negative side to this personality trait is taking a “win at any cost” approach. I believe I have a good balance between being a friendly helper and a strong achiever. I think having that balance allows me to adapt in any number of situations. I put the focus on my friends and family that is needed to build strong relationships while maintaining a strong drive to pursue success. Both are useful in interpersonal communication. Furthermore, I should hone in on my strengths to leverage each trait during my daily relationships.
Strengths (Friendly Helper):
· Kind, helpful, and cooperative – empathize with others
· Promote harmony – loyal, trusting and supportive
Weaknesses (Friendly Helper):
· Enable others – do things for them that they should do for themselves
· Leave little time for themselves
· Avoid confrontation – “peace at any price” approach
Strengths (Strong Achiever):
· Accomplish much
· Often take leadership positions – can get others to work together
Weaknesses (Strong Achiever):
· Too competitive/driven to succeed
· Can put others down – “win at any cost approach”
